French (le français), also known as la langue française, is a Romance language that belongs to the Indo-European language family. It evolved from the spoken Latin of the Roman Empire, sharing its roots with languages such as Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan. Today, French is one of the most influential global languages. After English, it is the second most widely spread language in the world and serves as an official language in 29 countries, many of which are part of La Francophonie—the international community of French-speaking nations. French is spoken as a first language in France, southern Belgium, western Switzerland, Monaco, and in parts of Canada, including Quebec, New Brunswick, and Ontario. It is also widely used in regions such as Louisiana in the United States, North Africa, Haiti, French Polynesia, and by educated communities across various parts of the world. According to the European Commission, French ranks as the fourth most widely spoken native language in the European Union, highlighting its continued cultural, academic, and professional importance worldwide.
